Tintagel

Tintagel

Tintagel, the place of legend, King Arthur, Merlin and a place where you can grab a couple of coconuts and clap them together as you and your squire Patsy go in search of The Holy Grail.

It’s also the place of Social Media over advertising where reality doesn’t match up to what you see!

If you take a look at the adverts (and indeed the guide you’re presented with when you buy tickets) it shows a drone shot panning up from a stunning metal statue of King Arthur – it dominates the view and is impressive.

The guide you get shows the face of Merlin carved into the rocks, a sight to behold in awe.

Then there is reality………

The King Arthur statue is actually only around 6ft tall and certainly does not dominate anything!

A stunning piece of work, but not the massive, dominating figure its made out to be!

Merlin’s magnificent carving is actually a tiny carving no bigger than your actual face (but still an excellent work of art), but not the massive imposing figure it’s made out to be!

And then there is Tintagel itself…..takes about 10 minutes to walk around and it’s your normal seaside town – the wow factor and potential to play on Arthurian legend is somewhat missing.

If you like Arthurian legend and don’t mind a walk then it’s a good albeit, short attraction to go and visit. If you go in the summer then I’d recommend taking a picnic or grabbing lunch early because it is busy. Good chips though!

I’m Matt, aka Behind the Geek.

Welcome to the site!

After a few years of Youtube and Instagram, I kept thinking these didn’t quite capture the experience, this is in part to me not being a particularly photo or video friendly type but I do have a way with words, or they have a way with me.

This site will have a collection of our holiday experiences, trips, food and other stuff that may or may not be fun. It will contain sarcasm, and a lot of movie and TV references.

You’ll also get to meet Porgwin, our channel/site mascot who started life in a grab machine and was rescued by me minutes before watching Episode VIII of Star Wars, hence Porgwin, half penguin, half porg.
